After its creation and presentation at the Port-Musée (Harbour-Museum) of Douarnenez and its second presentation at the Port Center of Le Havre, the “The Box” exhibition calls at our port for 9 months, from the 9th of April 2018 to the 6th of January 2019.
For the occasion, the exhibition has been redesigned and rearranged to best fit our premises. Most of all, “The Box” will benefit from additional content and visitors will be able to discover the close relationship between the harbour of Dunkirk and containers.
This topic befits particularly current events in our city, as a public debate to expand the superficy of the harbour (Project CAP 2020) was undertaken at the end of last year.
But, in the end, what even is a container? It is a metallic caisson with standardised dimensions. A simple rectangular box which has revolutionised maritime transport, global production systems and even… your own life!
Follow the trail of our exhibition to find out about the history of containers: from ancient amphorae to gigantic ships of the future, via all the original uses of this box today as accommodation, offices and even stadiums!
Even though “The Box” tries to be comprehensive about the history of the container, it is still enjoyable and accessible to all audiences. It this new exhibition which the Harbour Museum of Dunkirk wishes, as all its exhibitions, to be ludic and interactive, you will find content specifically designed for children and families, such as Lego models, mini-quizzes, but also videos and playful activities.
The Harbour Museum of Dunkirk puts a special effort to develop this know-how throughout all its exhibitions, while remaining attentive to the requests and comments of its visitors, as evidenced by the last sequence of the “Que faut-il retenir ?” (“What must be remembered?”) exhibition, which was added after an idea left by one of our visitors in our guestbook during our “Tous Pirates ?” (“All pirates?”) exhibition.
Our exhibition will also be complemented with various animations (meetings, conferences, tours…) throughout the year.
